Now here is one I could talk about for days, weeks and even years!
I am an IBEW Journeyman Wireman
What exactly is an IBEW Journeyman Wireman and what do you do you ask?
Well, IBEW stands for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers…in case you did not know.
And a Journeyman Wireman in the non-union world is a licensed Electrician.
Yep, I said the word that is sore amongst so many out there UNION.
Don’t hate please. After all that is what got our country started for fair labor practices.
Everyone uses them to this day but still bashes us at every turn yet all the while gets help from what we laid down so many
I really don’t want to get into the whole union thing versus non-union thing on here, that is not what my post is about.
What I do
Well, in my part of the trade we do everything. Meaning, if you need it built, we can build it!
Seriously though, I for myself specialize in bending conduit, terminations (wire), pulling feeders and branch circuits and installing
anything that uses electricity. I have even installed solar panels out in San Antonio, TX.
I have built rocket launch pads out at the Cape (NASA & Air Force), Chemical factories, peaker power plants, schools, stores of all
kinds and even a fuel farm for Melbourne International Airport. I was one who built the Airside 2 terminal out at Orlando
In Virginia, I started in this trade. Heck, I even got to dig straight through some of the Washington Redskins football team players
front yards with heavy equipment (they loved that).
I’ve seen people get seriously hurt from electricity as well!! Not a subject I want to write about, trust me at that!
I have done many many things in my trade. For almost well over 20 years I have been in this trade!
Not until recently did I start taking pictures of some of the stuff I do, even videos.
Some place we are not allowed to even take pictures!! Top secret stuff!
Tell us more…
Well, I LOVE bending conduit! It is the most fun I have onsite than any other part of my trade hands down.
It’s funny how back in school when I was failing math and science I always said to myself…I’ll never use this crap!
Boy was I wrong!! I use math everyday from basic math all the way up to geometry. I even use a little physics which I
never took in school. I say a little science because certain metals are not to touch others because of its Mhz or voltages or even
the air itself is corrosive to certain metals.
So you see these are all things I have to think about on a daily basis.
For instance, when I bend conduit…I can not bend it more than 360 degrees and sometimes not even 270 in a full run of conduit.
We do have rules. LOL
There are so many pictures and videos out there on how to bend conduit it is amazing even to me that I even do that for a living!
Here is a video of one of the benders I use frequently on the job, I even have a video I made in the Orlando Sentinel Newspaper
facility on YouTube bending 2″ conduit with this same bender.
That bender is just one of the cool things I use on the job.
The IBEW have all sorts of videos online to show you how to do stuff like the one below:
I find my job very exciting and very fulfilling!
I have so much more to talk about and just can not fit it all into one post so I will continue this on and on.
I have many pictures that you will find interesting as well as many things you may have even seen for yourself like:
Big Thunder Mountain rehab project and other various jobs from Disney.
If you go through the lines at Big Thunder Mountain you will even get to play with some of the stuff I have personally installed.
Keep on the lookout for more post from me about the work I do as an IBEW Jorneyman Wireman.
It is a very exciting job!
Have any comments? Just send me anything
Just as a little note here: I am not into getting into a debate about Unions versus Non Unions. We all have a dangerous job!!
