Have you ever stepped on a yellowjacket nest in the ground or even mowed one over with any lawn equipment?
Well, I have and here I will let you know how to almost rid a nest of yellowjackets in the ground.
A nest of yellowjackets
Now, we all know that yellowjackets make a nest just about anywhere.
Some are in the ground, some are under an awning, some are even under palm fronds and sometimes even under old vehicles.
But, for this post, this involves the ones in the ground!
We did not know of this nest until one of Allison’s kids was cleaning up in the yard and came upon this nest. Not seeing it at all until too late.
I believe she was stung 5 times and is a good thing she was not allergic!
That is the worst thing when one of those little bastards gets ya, right?
Only because they like to bring their buddies along for the fight.
Now, if anyone has ever tried to get rid of those that bury themselves in the ground then, you know how difficult it can be to get rid of them.
I thought of all types of ways, even to the point of a gallon of gas and a match but I have nothing but woods behind the house and I tend to like the lush green woods.
How I almost rid the nest
Now, I say “almost” rid the nest. Yes, I was not successful at my task at hand!
I pulled an old back of a TV off where the nest was located in which I thought it was underneath but to my dismay I found out it was in fact in the ground.
I went out and bought some yellowjacket spray which I can tell you had no effect on those flying terrors!
I even pulled all debris away from where they were flying out of the nest and sprayed the hell out of it not once but twice and to no effect!!
I have a few video’s of my little adventure of trying to kill the little buggers as you can view below.
Now, if they are bumblebees or even honeybees, I will not touch those as they actually contribute to our world but yellowjackets and hornets as far as I know, do nothing but give us pain!
Not only that, sometimes makes the manliest men running and go screaming like little girls and women scream louder and higher than our ears are permitted to withstand! LOL
Don’t laugh, we have all been there before…
How to almost rid a nest of yellowjackets in the ground
Here below I shot 3 videos of how I was trying to rid the nest but all in all, I had no such luck!
So, this weekend, I have the daunting task of trying something extremely dangerous or even borderline insane.
I thought maybe if I get a shovel and sink the blade into the ground real close to the nest, run away like a mad man and come back after the swarm calms down.
Only then proceed to scoop the nest up possibly crushing the nest underground.
Now, in my head this should work for the most part or maybe I have lost all common sense and you know what they say about common sense… sometimes it is not so common.
Now, as I type this out I have this little “awake dream” of flipping the blade upwards to only fling the bees into the air and part of the nest which could be disastrous for myself!!
I have never been one to come up with the best plan for these types of situations. Nonetheless, it should be interesting.
Look for follow up videos of my insane ideas. But for the time being, here are my first few attempts…
Here is my first video of accessing the situation:
I have exposed the nest and the adrenaline is pumping! So I went back to look again:
Here is where I went for the kill shot!:
Here is the bad news, I have to try this all over again!
I must be insane!! I have seen some crazy pictures of how large these nests can get and I may be biting off more than I care to chew!
Thanks for taking the time to read about how to almost rid a nest of yellowjackets in the ground and wish me luck!! I’m gunna need it.
